Finance

Finance that reads the same records as everyone else.

Odoo's finance apps cover accounting, invoicing, expenses, electronic signatures, spreadsheets and sustainability reporting. They share one database with sales, purchasing and inventory, so an invoice or a vendor bill starts from the order it belongs to instead of being typed in again.

In Odoo, Accounting and Invoicing are two separate apps. Invoicing sends and tracks invoices; Accounting is the full set of books.

What it does

Books that follow the business, not the other way round.

Most finance work is moving the same facts between systems: an order becomes an invoice, an invoice meets a bank line, a bank line meets a report. Odoo's finance apps are built so those hand-offs happen inside one database.

01A sale reaches the books on its own
Invoices are created from sales orders, vendor bills from purchase orders, and stock valuation from inventory moves. Odoo's Accounting page lists Sales, Purchase, Expenses, Inventory and Documents as the apps it works with.
02Bank lines meet their records
Bank statements can be synchronised instead of imported by hand, and Odoo suggests which invoice or bill each transaction belongs to, so people review matches instead of searching for them.
03Capture, then check
Vendor bills can be read from a PDF or an image so you validate the data instead of keying it. Odoo labels this as an AI feature, and its documentation lists the digitisation service among those paid for with prepaid credits.
04Local rules are a package
Each country has a fiscal localisation: a set of modules for its taxes, charts of accounts, statements and e-invoicing formats. Odoo installs the core of it for you when you add the app, and you tune the rest.
05Reports as live as the data
Reports update as entries are posted, can be annotated and exported, and the Spreadsheet app can pull the same live data into your own dashboards.
06Get paid, and sign
Customers can pay invoices online from a portal, late payments are chased by email, post or SMS on a schedule you set, and contracts can be signed online with an audit trail.

The full set of books, with the busywork reduced

Reconciliation, taxes, deferrals and reports on one ledger.

  • Bank synchronisation and smart matching suggest which record each bank transaction belongs to.
  • Pre-configured charts of accounts, taxes, country reports, audit files and fiscal positions come with each country's localisation.
  • Electronic invoicing in the formats a country needs, including Peppol.
  • Automated follow-ups for late payments by email, post or SMS, based on how many days overdue.
  • Deferrals of revenue and expenses, done manually or on validation, with an audit report.
  • Taxes and accounts applied automatically from the customer's or supplier's location and status.
  • Odoo 20 adds parent accounts for structuring charts of accounts, and an AI assistant that answers questions using only the accounting data in your database.
What you’re looking at

Matching, not searching

Each bank line shows the record Odoo thinks it belongs to. The accountant confirms the obvious ones in a click and spends their time on the few that need judgement.

A worked example

A vendor bill, from the inbox to the books.

One bill, followed through the finance apps. It is an illustration of how the pieces connect, built from what Odoo's pages describe each app doing.

  1. Bill arrivesIt reaches an email address linked to Odoo, or is uploaded as a PDF.
  2. Data capturedOdoo reads the supplier, dates and lines so you check them instead of typing them.
  3. ValidatedThe bill is checked and posted, with the right taxes and accounts applied.
  4. Bank line matchedWhen the payment appears on the synchronised statement, it is matched to the bill.
  5. Reports updateThe books, and any dashboard built on them, show the result.

Illustrative. Which steps are automatic depends on your setup, and AI document capture uses prepaid credits.

Who uses it

Different people, one set of records.

Finance touches almost everyone. Odoo's pages describe these roles.

RoleWhat they do
AccountantsReconcile bank lines, validate bills, manage taxes and deferrals, and close periods in the Accounting app.

Local rules and other systems

How it meets your country and your tools.

From Odoo's documentation on fiscal localisations, its app pages and its Odoo 20 release notes, read in November 2026.

Connects toHow
IndiaOdoo's documentation lists an India localisation and says Odoo is compliant with the Indian GST e-invoice system. Its page covers e-invoicing, the e-way bill, GSTIN checks, GSTR-1 and GSTR-2B filing, GST tax reports, a TDS and TCS threshold alert and Bill of Entry support, and GST features need the business to be registered under GST. Odoo 20's release notes add support for GST composition taxpayers (CMP-08 and GSTR-4), the QRMP scheme, GST self-invoices under reverse charge, a bill of entry flow for imports, more flexible TDS handling and financial statements in the Schedule III format.
Sri LankaOdoo 20's release notes (September 2026) say a new localisation package is available for Sri Lanka, with the chart of accounts, taxes, balance sheet, profit and loss reports and the VAT 001 and WHT 001 reports, and that the sequence format and layout of tax invoices follow Gazette No. 2481/22. The package is new, and the list of packages in Odoo's documentation did not yet name Sri Lanka when we read it, so we would test it against your statutory needs before you commit.
Other countriesThe same list names packages for many other countries, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, Singapore, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates. Only some have their own documentation page.
Banks and payment providersBank synchronisation removes manual statement imports. Online payments run through providers such as Adyen, PayPal and Stripe.
E-invoicing networksElectronic invoicing supports several formats depending on the country, including Peppol.
Other Odoo appsSales, Purchase, Expenses, Inventory, Documents, Subscriptions, Project, eCommerce and Point of Sale all create or feed finance records.

Odoo's documentation says you can only change the fiscal localisation package before any entry has been posted, so choose it first.

Starting out

How a finance rollout usually begins.

Odoo's documentation and app pages point to a sensible order.

  1. 01Choose the localisationPick the country package before posting anything. Odoo installs the core modules for the company's country and you tune the rest.
  2. 02Set up the chart and taxesCheck the chart of accounts, switch on the taxes you will use and configure country statements.
  3. 03Connect your bankLink the bank so statements arrive without manual import.
  4. 04Load opening balancesBring in open invoices, bills and balances so reports start from the right place.
  5. 05Add the other appsTurn on Expenses, Sign or Spreadsheet when the books are running.

Decisions to settle early

  • Which fiscal localisation each company uses: in a multi-company set-up each company can use a different package.
  • Whether you need Invoicing only or the full Accounting app.
  • Which services use prepaid credits, such as document digitisation and SMS, and who tops them up.
  • Whether tax statements for your country are ready-made, or need to be scoped.

Questions

Straight answers.

Do I need the Accounting app to send invoices?

No. Invoicing is its own app, and Odoo's Invoicing page says you can send and receive unlimited e-invoices with it. The Accounting app adds the full set of books for accountants.

Does Odoo handle Indian GST?

Odoo's documentation says it is compliant with the Indian GST e-invoice system and lists e-invoicing, the e-way bill, GST return filing and GST reports on the India page. GST features need the business to be registered under GST, and e-invoicing needs the GSP and NIC registration steps that page describes.

What about Sri Lanka?

Odoo 20's release notes say a new localisation package is available for Sri Lanka, covering the chart of accounts, taxes, balance sheet, profit and loss reports and the VAT 001 and WHT 001 reports, with tax invoices that follow Gazette No. 2481/22. It is new, and the package list in Odoo's documentation did not yet name Sri Lanka in November 2026. We would run it against your own statutory returns in a pilot before relying on it.

Is document capture free?

Odoo's pricing page lists AI scanning of vendor bills and expenses among the services paid for with in-app purchase credits, which are not part of the plans. Plan for a credit balance if you will use it.

Can an electronic signature replace a wet-ink one?

Odoo's Sign page says it follows eIDAS, the US ESIGN Act and India's ITA and ICA, among others. Whether a particular document is valid is a legal question, so check with your own adviser for important contracts.

Can employees claim expenses without the Accounting app?

Yes. Odoo's Expenses page says employees can be reimbursed without using the accounting app, and that approved expenses post to accounting journals when it is installed.
